February 15th, 2003: Little did we know By Mary MacElveen
November 3, 2006
On February 15th, 2003, the world came together to tell Bush that we did not support his invasion of Iraq, but little did we know at that time the extent of the damage that would be done. We, who protested this war, never foresaw that over 2,800 U.S. soldiers would be lost to us forever. Never did we foresee that 655,000 innocent Iraqis would be killed. I use that figure of 655,000 based upon the publication (…)

If we are to believe that we live in a country based upon Christian values in which Bush and those like him wear God on their sleeve, as evident with the war in Iraq, in which Bush and the Republicans have broken some of the Ten Commandments. We must face up to the fact; we have not been living up to our Christian values. The reason why I only mention Christianity is because most that have led this (…) -

In his latest column, Lawrence C. Levy of Newsday calls upon the Democrats to show character when it comes to whom they shall vote for in the NY State Comptroller race.
In his column, he writes “But Democrats must show character and courage. Character, to look beyond party labels and cut loose a guy they have supported for years. And courage, because a vote (…) -

In hopes that this column will reach those who are more inclined to vote Republican in the upcoming midterm elections, I want to ask you flat out, why should any voter even entertain voting Republican? What hope have your candidates given to the American people as many continue to suffer from despair?
As many Americans grow bone weary of the war in Iraq and are beginning to wise up, this war has only delivered (…) -

For the NY State Comptroller Race equate Callahan with Enron
By Mary MacElveen
October 30, 2006
In the race for New York State Comptroller which pits the Democrat incumbent Alan Hevesi against his Republican challenger, Chris Callahan to those who are vested in the New York State retirement fund, I want you to look at Callahan and think Enron.
Yes, Callahan wants to give you the freedom to invest your retirement in whichever way you so choose, in my opinion that is gambling with your (…) -

In reading this article in which Bush takes on Dems over Iraq, security, one is reminded of Warner Wolf (former CBS sportscaster) whose famous line was “Let’s go to the video tape” Please pay attention to this video tape in which former General Wesley Clarke speaks on behalf of Ned Lamont His words are not to be taken lightly since he has seen what war can do (…) -

Not every issue is black and white as evident in this Italo Zanzi for congress campaign commercial especially when it says that Zanzi has been fighting this issue for months. In this complex issue concerning illegal immigration, this is when experience does matter. Zanzi acts like he can wave a magic wand and the issue will be solved. The commercial also states that he just (…) -

To Peter King and Joe Lieberman: Why hasn’t Osama bin Laden been captured? By Mary MacElveen October 24, 2006
As many viewed Keith Olbermann’s blistering on-air commentary of the GOP’s use of an ad to instill fear amongst the ‘gullible’ electorate using both pictures and words from Osama bin Laden, Mr. Olbermann was right to exhibit such outrage in targeting the Republican Party. Mr. Olbermann was correct to target both Bush and Cheney in the use of this ad.
The use of even his image (…) -

The GOP’s message of fear and subjugation

In reading this Washington Post article: GOP aims to scare up big voter turn out, I zeroed in on this, “GOP officials plan to spend the final days of the 2006 campaign attempting to rally partisans and limit conservative defections with dire warnings about the consequences of a Democratic Congress.” They are warning the base that “Democrats will raise taxes, weaken national security and liberalize social (…) -

I have been writing now since the 2000 presidential election which pitted Al Gore against George W. Bush. In many past pieces I wrote in the first person and on the advice from fellow writers and editors, over time learned to let the facts speak, but always asking my readers how they felt concerning the issue(s) at hand. I have read how other columnists reach out to their (…)
